Sally Jacobson just had a birthday party for her liver. Sally is only 78, but her liver is 100 years old. Really. If you’re thinking you’re too old for something – anything – this story should give you a reason to look at things differently.
Sally’s Story
In 2006, Sally was near death, waiting for a liver to become available for transplant. When her surgeon asked her if she was open to an older liver from an 81-year-old man who had died of an aneurysm, she gratefully accepted. Now, 17 years later, Sally is well, enjoying the three grandchildren who have been born since her transplant, and an advocate for organ donations in her home state of North Dakota.
Here’s the Proof
At 100 Year Lifestyle, we always say that age isn’t an issue when it comes to your health. Sally is living proof that age certainly isn’t an issue when it comes to organ donation.
Aging isn’t a disease. You can get older without getting old. In other words, it’s possible for much of your body to be in good working order until your last breath…and beyond. Luckily for Sally, that was clearly the case with her donor.
Age Isn’t An Issue
In fact, Cecil Lockhart passed at the age of 95 and currently holds the record for being the oldest organ donor on record. The previous holder of that title was 93 years old.
Cecil’s family said he wanted to become an organ donor after his son, Stanley, healed the lives of 75 people through tissue donation and restored sight to two others through cornea donation after he died in 2010.
Organ donation is just one way to have a tremendous impact and leave a living legacy behind, regardless of your age.
