Get a pet, live longer. According to the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), it’s a fact. Not only do pets add life to our days but they add days to our lives.

All Good

The science shows that pet ownership can have positive effects on our emotional, psychological, and physical health and wellbeing. Walking a dog or playing with a cat can lead to increased physical activity, lower blood pressure, and improved social connectedness. This is the stuff that long and healthy lives are made of.

It isn’t a stretch to understand how walking a dog regularly can get you off the couch, moving in nature. That’s good for anyone. However, it’s particularly good news for some. Owning a dog has been linked to a 33% lower risk of death among heart attack survivors

All Animals

But it’s not all about dogs. A study of over 2,400 cat owners over a 20 year period found that the owners were significantly less at-risk of dying due to cardiovascular disease (including stroke and heart attack) than non-owners.

Actually, all pets come with health benefits. Rabbits, birds, horses, even snakes and fish can reduce tension, lessen depression, and lower blood pressure. Pets fulfill basic needs of humans including companionship, the need to nurture something living, and in most cases, touch.

Don’t forget to factor in cuteness, unconditional love, and the ability to make you smile. Owning a pet will keep you busy in the best possible way. They might even free up some of your time as pet owners over age 65 make 30% fewer visits to their allopathic doctors than people without pets.
